ForCircle Line is provided at Bishan and Dhoby Ghaut stations and a linkway. The future Downtown Line will interchange with the North South Line at Newton MRT Station. When the Woodlands Extension was opened in 1996, the Branch MRT Line consisting of the route from Jurong East MRT Station to Choa Chu Kang MRT Station was integrated into the main line.

History[]

[edit]Initial System[]

[edit]2nd phase of development (Woodlands Extension)[]

[edit]North South Line Extension[]

A 1 km one station extension to the North South Line will be constructed and completed by 2014. The new Marina South Pier station will be located near the upcoming International Cruise Terminal at Marina Bay. Minister Raymond Lim announced on 12 February 2009 that the completion date for the extension, initially due for completion in 2015, will be brought forward by a year to 2014.[1]

[edit]Jurong East Modification Project[]

The Jurong East Modification Project (JEMP) consisted of the construction of a new platform and the addition of a fourth track to Jurong East Station which is now in use from 27 May 2011. After the completion of the JEMP, the North South Line utilises two tracks at Jurong East, increasing the frequency of trains at peak hours from 7am to 9am on weekdays. Waiting time is now reduced from 4.5 minutes to 2.5 minutes. There are 5 new Kawasaki Heavy Industries C151A in service from 27 May 2011, other 17 new trains will be in service by December 2011, it will also open in the evening peak hours.
